January 11, 2021

While it is all well and good to love and respect nature and not to wish harm on any living thing, many people draw the line when pests such as ants invade our homes and try to make them their own. While they do not carry any diseases, ants can ruin food, make a mess of the home, trigger allergies in some people, and cause harmful bites at times. Many people spend hours searching online for answers to questions such as – how to get rid of ants in the kitchen, bathroom, or yard. If you want to get rid of ants and similar pests, without out right killing them and using harmful chemicals and products that could hurt your family or your pets, then you need to consider some of these more natural methods for figuring out how to get rid of ants in the house.

Remove Food and Water Sources

It seems fairly obvious, but one of the best ways to keep ants from turning your house into their home is to not give them reasons to get set up inside in the first place. Removing access to food and water will make it less likely that any ants or similar pests that come into your home will want to stay. Keeping counter sand floors cleaned and putting all food in airtight containers and wrappers can help reduce access. It can be difficult to fully eliminate food and water sources, especially in places like the kitchen, but there are other steps you can take once you have obvious access to food taken care of.

Platn and Use Mint

Peppermint is a natural insect repell ant that has long been used to keep ants and other household pests away. Ants hate the smell and will avoid going into areas with mint present. So, for indoor areas, you can use mint oils to wipe down base boards, mix a little with water to use on counters and floors, or you can soak cotton balls with peppermint oil and place in cabinets and in areas you often see ants. You can also place a peppermint oil cotton ball in areas such as cabinets where the ants frequent. Planting mint outside around your home can also help keep ants from coming near your home in the first place too.

Vinegar or Lemon Juice

Natural acids found in vinegar and lemon juice is a great deterrent for many insect pests because it damaged their exoskeleton on contact. But it can also be sued as a barrier to keep them from getting into certain areas in the first place. Mix a 50/50 solution of water and either vinegar or lemon juice in a spray bottle to spray on the ants to kill them, or to clean surfaces to keep them clean and to deter the ants from entering those areas. These homemade spray sare effective and also safe to use in kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, and anywhere else in the home, even around pets and kids.

Cinnamon Power and Oils

Cinnamon is a great way to get rid of ants in and around the home. It can be used as an insecticide and a deterrent without a lot of risk to your pets and family. When an ant inhales cinnamon, it suffocates and dies but it takes such a small amount to do this is poses no real risks to animals or people. Powdered cinnamon can be sprinkled on ant hills outside and along their trails indoors. Likewise, cinnamon oils can be used the same way mint oils are used as a natural cleaner and deterrent. Oil and water mixes can be used on most surfaces anywhere in the house for a safe and easy way to get rid of ants.

There are many other natural ways to deal with ants and other pests in the home including, pepper, cayenne oil, diatomaceous earth, and ginger. Many home owners end up, at some point and time, asking the question of how to get rid of ants in the house. Instead of reaching for the chemical pesticides, trying a saferad natural approach may be the best solution for the questions of how to get rid of ants in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and anywhere else in the home.
